“Come here I want to show you something,” he said pointing at the screen.
It was a game called Moorhuhn.
That was the first time I ever saw and played a video game.
The mechanics are simple, you shoot chickens that appear on the screen, but whenever I played it I had so much fun and I was happy…
I would play the game for hours and every time I would get lost in the world of Moorhuhn…
This created a desire in me to do the same…
I thought how cool it would be if I created a game with endless worlds, stories, and adventures other people could play…
And that’s how my dream of becoming a game developer was born.
But I had a big problem…
I Didn't Know Where Or Even How To Learn Game Development...
This was 20 years ago and there were no resources I was aware of that I could use to learn how to make games…
Unreal Engine was not even released for the public…
The internet was just becoming a thing and there were no books about game development in my city…
It was not until I was 22 years old that I began learning how to make games…
And I started the same way as everyone else – watching Unreal Engine tutorials on YouTube.
Because I listened to the “good” advice that a lot of people in online game dev communities give…
“There are plenty of free videos on YouTube, you don’t need anything else” – is the advice you’ll usually get.
But what that actually means is try to follow poorly structured YouTube videos that only make you copy-paste what’s being done in the video without any proper explanation…
…and people who are “teaching” have no idea how to write clean code or good coding practices, and they never created a game more complex than move the cube using blueprints…
But when you are a beginner, you’re not aware of these things so you waste your precious time trying to learn from videos that “teach” game development the wrong way in the first place…
And if you have any questions, good luck getting an answer since…
No One On YouTube Will Bother Helping You Out By Answering Your Questions In The Comments. In The Video They Say They Will Help You, But They Never Do...
I was determined to do anything to learn how to make games with Unreal, Blueprints, and C++. So I searched for other ways how to do it…
This is where I got another “good” advice from online game dev communities, which is the same thing we hear even today:
College and Bootcamps are a good way to learn game development, plus you get a degree and certificate in the end that will help you get a job.
What that actually means is, spend 4 years of your life learning boring theory about how programming works and how to use it for game development without any real-world practice…
…and get left behind by people who get real-world game development skills instead of pure theory concepts so by the time you finish college, all job position are already filled with qualified game devs who can do the job as opposed to just have a degree as “proof” they can create games…
But I had no idea about that at the time, so, once again, I stumbled on the same stone, and joined college and an online Bootcamp at the same time.
I though that one would compliment the other, and if I need help I can always reach out to the instructors for assistance…
But, same as the first time…
I Was Wrong, Because Even College Professors And Bootcamp Instructors Don't Care About Explaining More Than The Theory Of Game Dev...
To Make The Matter Worse...
I was afraid the answer I get would confuse me even more…
I Was In For A Big Surprise...
The videos they had were not that good at explaining how to code…
Things got complicated very fast, but that was not the worst part…
The worst part were the assignments…
Imagine going to your first driving class and the instructor shows you the steering wheel, the break and gas pedal, explains in theory how they work, and tells you “okay, now you’re going to race in Formula 1.”
That’s how the programming explanation and assignments are in a Bootcamp…
And as you would expect, they were hard to solve for a beginner, so I had to search for a solution online…
I found some code and copied it in the exercise which I submitted for evaluation…
